Well – what a shambles the last email proved! – I’m so sorry to cause so much hassle.

As many of you found the re subscribe link took you to a “Sign Up” form  – which then told you, you were already on the list! Those with more savvy than me found the “Update Preferences” link at the foot of the mailing. I finally discovered some online tutorials with tech wizards in California that I hope have now given me the coding to make it work!

As card carrying members of our Loyalty Scheme we really do want you to stay with us through this process. We really want you to stay with us here in Borrowdale again soon. If you’d like us to keep in touch, to forward news from Borrowdale and alert you to tempting discount offers – you need ( I’m so so sorry ) to complete the process. The Law requires you to opt in and I’m not allowed to complete the subscription process for you.

Please use button below or the link in the email circular to update preferences. Alternatively, ring Nuala on 017687 77214 to have this done manually for you.

Roberta ( Percy ) Kelly’s paintings help illustrate this edition of our newsletter. Muted & shadowy paintings portray the tormented artistic life of a working class Cumbrian seeking to reconcile their gender in an  era devoid of light or hope. Gaining now in recognition and appreciation, their work is well worth viewing. The main picture is of Loweswater and this Uldale – Lakeland’s northernmost & almost forgotten valley… it has a Lake too – do you know which?
The drive from Bassenthwaite by Robin Hood to Hesket Newmarket takes you through the open Caldbeck Common’s  – that land The Back O’ Skiddaw  from where John Peel hailed and halloo’d

Eycott Hill.

In the far North East of the National Park is Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s newest Nature Reserve. I explored this late one evening – scrambling over a few low rocky ridges on the way to the little summit – ( lower than the carpark from where you start ) – it has to be the easiest ascent of a Lakeland top – ever! The views to SE – S  – SW are truely stupendous – a highly recommended short excursion missed by AW but a worthwhile half day for any lover of the wilder lakeland landscape. More info here.

Borrowdale Badgers: After nearly three years of patient watching – Miro – our hard working Slovakian member of staff,  was recently rewarded with the joyous scene of a family of Badgers frolicking around outside their local sett. These flighty fellows are easily spooked … but if taking an evening stroll do keep an eye and ear out for them – they are sometimes seen in the daylight of our long summer evenings…. and more frequently can be heard whickering their territorial claims to the spoils of Rosthwaite’s gardens.

Summer Mid Week Breaks

During July & early August we are again offering our Summer Discount breaks for stays of three or more nights from only £62pp DB&B
p.s. ….Despite rumours a foot  – we are all still here… But if from within your own social network you know of anyone who would relish nurturing the Old Oak through a new era of Fawlty Towering – please send them the link:- Hotel For Sale
