Traditional Lake District Accommodation
“The fleeting hour of life of those who love the hills is quickly spent,
but the hills,  they are eternal.”
Alfred Wainwright
In art and literature, Autumn often evokes a certain melancholia – a time for reflection, a time to take stock…. a time to count our blessings. And so it is.
Welcome to our Autumn missive with news from Borrowdale.
Borrowdale Show
Borrowdale Shepherd’s Meet reverted to a traditional Sheep Show this year;  with valley farmers gathered in the field opposite to see whose stock was worth a few rosettes. In the past ,The Royal Oak has always provided a cup for the best puppies in the Hound Trail – but with that not running this year we’ve taken on sponsoring a prize for the best group of Herdwick Rams. Won this year by top trophy hunter Young “Ginger”  Joe Weir from Chapel Farm.
…also taking stock recently have been
UNESCO. The Lake District finally being rewarded with the
World Heritage Status  it so rightly deserves. With Brexit and a perhaps a changing world for Hill Farming the years ahead may be challenging – reconciling the often competing needs of Recreation, Farming and Nature – will no doubt continue to cause  consternation & controversy. What kind of Lake District do you want to see? It’s a debate we all need to participate in.

     Good Read

The sale last August of Thorneythwaite to NT caused quite a furore – splitting as it did, the house and land.
In this book Ian Hall, who as a boy lived there throughout the 1960s, explores and explains the history of The Farm and Borrowdale. Just as he was about to go to print – a NT Archeological Survey of their new property revealed substantial remains of a long established Bronze Age settlement – thus pushing back the known habitation of Borrowdale another millenia

   April’s Competition

The Prize Winners were Mr & Mrs Carr from Buxton. We hope Andy Beck’s book of coloured Wainwright Sketches will grace their coffee table and be the envy of others.
