Winter’s claw still  grasps our Lakeland Fells, as we in Borrowdale emerge from enforced hibernation. Here is our late winter Newsletter with attractive special offers and local goss.

Works to resurface the B5289 have seen road closures, detours and chicanes resulting in an unusually quiet start to the year. Peace and solitude – so tranquil for some – so lonely and isolating for others.
How must the young man who lost himself on Scafell Pike have felt as he began a second dark night out alone? I felt pretty beat after only five hours searching through knee deep slush and howling gales on the first night of the remarkable rescue. ( Click link)  Thankfully he was found alive – but it remains a salutary reminder of how essential good navigational skills can be.

As with some other protracted searches of the Central Fells – this lone walker was found in Upper Eskdale … The picture above was our winter quiz – won by Ann Bristow from  Atherton in Lancashire  who most accurately described this beautiful view taken from the video of Lakeland Winter – by Guy Richardson. She wins an extra night’s stay – Free of Charge.

Spot: Our resident sausage recycler died this month and we are touched that so many of you have already shared your sadness. He was such a gentle & friendly dog – a fixture by the rear door and loved by all.
Thanks to Barman Tod from the Riverside who took this picture on New Bridge.

Introducing Graeme – our  new Junior Manager and Cook.
Classic Discounts this April
Several of our regulars tell us they too have classic cars – but so few of you seem to use them.
With Drive it Day coming up in April we here at The Royal Oak are prepared to offer a 10% Discount to those that turn up in their Pre 1986 Vintage, Historic or Classic Car.
“Carry On … Regardless”
No not the title of a Kenneth Williams or Frankie Howard film, nor a track from Beautiful South – just a reminder that Susan , Nuala,  Ann and the team are all still here. We’ve been a little alarmed at the number of people that assume we have sold  and gone! While the hotel does still remain “on the market” we are most definitely still here – carrying on our own brand of friendly and informal hospitality.
We promise to let you know if we go.
It’s Off. Objections from multiple sources seem to have prevailed. Thank you to those that supported the campaign to Stop Thirlmere being developed as a cheap theme park. It’s been announced today that the application has been withdrawn.
We believe that Honister may be re applying for their own version – contentious but with less environmental impact.
